Avoid The Most Common Implant Scanning Mistakes

Capture great implant scans, like the one above, every time with Paramount’s tips.

Scanning for implants can be tricky. At Paramount, we have experts to help guide you through the process. Follow these tips to ensure all your implants seat perfectly:

  • Ensure that you select “implant” or something similar on your scanner. In addition to the normal scan you would capture, selecting the implant option provides a scan for the scan body.

  • Do not overscan. More implant issues are due to distortions from overscanning. It is better to under-scan. If there are smaller triangulations on your scan, you are likely overscanning.

Overscanning is evident by smaller triangulations

  • Remove the healing cap and scan the sulcus before the tissue collapses for ideal emergence profile. Do not rescan the sulcus once the tissue has collapsed.

  • Use the correct scan body. It must be made by the same implant manufacturer you plan to use for the abutment, as well as be the correct width and connection type.

  • Ensure the scan body is properly seated before scanning. The best way to check is to take an x-ray. An alternative is to torque the scan body to 5NCM instead of hand-tightening. The scan body should be completely stable and should not move at all or rotate when seated.

Avoid bad scans like this with our tips

  • Make sure the scan body isn’t touching adjacent teeth. If the scan body touches, the design software cannot use the scan and the only solution is a new scan. You can use floss to check if the scan body touches adjacent teeth.

  • Capture the notches on the top of the scan body. These notches are the most important part of the scan body to capture.

  • Remove the scan body for the bite registration. This will ensure you capture the patient’s regular bite without obstruction.

  • Do not overscan. More implant issues are due to distortions from overscanning. It is better to under-scan. If there are smaller triangulations on your scan, you are likely overscanning.

Please note: when using an Encode healing abutment, you do not need to remove the cap or insert a scan body.
